Lyon France

Starting May 2015 Eurostar will be operating direct trains to Lyon, which will mean you can reach the city in under five hours  from London, perhaps this is the ideal time to pay this city a visit. Recognised for its culinary delights, it now has new attractions that have created other reasons to vacation.

The redeveloped dock area on the banks of the Rhone and the Saone have given the area a lift, here you will find the recently opened Musee de Confluence, a ultramodern science and anthropology museum, in addition to a new arts and music venue La Sucriere located in an old sugar warehouse. Needless to say there are plenty of classy bars and restaurants where you can sample some of Lyons gastronomic delights.

Situated 250 miles further south than Paris, the weather in summer is wonderful, nice and hot just like us British like it, however it as plenty to offer at other times of the year. May 13-17, is when it hosts Nuits Sonores, a five day and night festival of electronic music and art, with many locations across the city converted into stages. Starting September 2015 Lyon will launch four months of contemporary art with Lyon Beinnale.

Opened last summer, in the heart of the city, you will find Slo Living, the city’s first designer hostel, the hotel is also a venue for various events throughout the year, has a very laid back atmosphere, and guests have use of a great patio area for getting to know each other. Dormitories from 25 euro, doubles from 75 euros. Slo-hostel.com.

Still Roaming

The previous decision by the European Commission to end mobile phone roaming charge by the end of 2015 has been rejected after European ministers vetoed the proposals. It was hoped that it would be a lot cheaper for people on holiday to connect to the internet, make calls and texts and not be presented with a massive bill on their return. Instead, a council of national telecoms ministers have decided to allow consumers a daily overseas allowance of 5MB as part of their normal tariff, after which additional charges would apply.

Party Pooper

Following the murder of the two British tourists last September, Thailand has restricted some beach parties. The province of Surat Thani is worst affected, with the back packers haven of Ko Tao where he murders took place, and Ko Samui been completed banned. The heavily marketed and notorious Full Moon Party on Ko Phangon will remain.

Fez Morocco

I loved the film Aladdin, I know I’m a bit old for that, even when it was first released, Fez is full of wonderful  Arabian Nights architecture, it has the greatest number of original complete medieval buildings in the Arab World. There is plenty to fill your weekend, there are thousands of streets and alleys in the medina, a warren of fairy-tale gardens to explore, and don’t forget the shops for that unusual item to haggle over and bring back. Departing on March 22.Returns to Fez are from £82 with Ryanair.
